5 business opportunities for stay-at-home mums

Finding a job can be very challenging, sometimes. The search for a greener pasture is one of the major reasons why most Nigerians are relocating to other countries.

According to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the unemployment rate in Nigeria as of the fourth quarter of 2020 was 33.3%. This means that about 23.18 million Nigerians were unemployed during that period.

After I completed my NYSC program, I was worried about getting a job, and when I told my mom about it, she said, “If you can’t find a job, create one!” And guess what! That advice has been beneficial to me in the last ten years.

I support financial independence for women because, even if your husband is wealthy, it makes no sense if you can’t afford to buy anything unless he gives you the money.

When women are financially empowered, they provide better support for their families and contribute more to their communities. This can have a positive ripple effect on society as a whole.

Motherhood can have a significant impact on a woman’s ability to work outside the home. Also, some women may choose to become stay-at-home moms because they feel it is the best way to provide for their children’s needs. While staying at home can provide more time for child rearing and household duties, it can also lead to financial lack and poverty.

Are you looking for businesses that you can start as a stay-at-home mom? When it comes to business ideas for moms in Nigeria, the possibilities are endless! From selling farm-fresh produce from your own garden to setting up online skill acquisition training from home, you can do just about anything with the right knowledge and motivation.

This post will guide you on how to earn money from a side hustle. Are you ready? If so, let’s get started!

Nowadays, most people enjoy purchasing everything online. We have many e-commerce stores where you can purchase different goods at a lower price and resell them to your customers at a higher price.

You can start this business with little or no capital. If you don’t have any capital, advertise the products on your page, and when a customer pays for them, you use the funds to acquire the products and deliver them. This is how many women are making money online, and you can become one of them.

Just identify products that have a high demand and start advertising them. You can also use online marketplaces like Jumia, Konga, or Etsy to reach a wider audience.

Sewing and designMost of the popular and rich fashion designers you see today started their businesses right from the comfort of their homes. Whether it is making a new dress or fixing the old one, sewing is an easy home-based business you can do. All you need are some fabrics and a simple sewing machine, which costs about 80 thousand naira, or you can buy fairly used ones for a cheaper price. Learning how to sew online is possible. So if you have a passion for it, then go for it.

Baking and catering services

Every day is someone’s birthday, which is why the demand for cake is high. If you love cooking delicious meals, why not turn it into a profitable business? Not everyone has the time to cook, especially in busy cities like Lagos, Abuja, or Port Harcourt.

You can start by offering food services for special occasions before gradually expanding your client base with time. Don’t feel shy about your business. Spread the news to everyone, both online and offline.

Snap beautiful pictures of your delicacy and post them regularly on social media. Then pray and wait for massive results.

Writing or virtual assistance services
Did you know that you can work as a writer, customer service agent, social media account manager, email marketer, or provide other administrative services from the comfort of your bedroom? I know a young lady who bought a costly house in Lagos with the money she earned as a virtual assistant.

Every day, good writers are hired to write books, blog articles, scripts, etc. Even if no one hires you, you can publish your work on Amazon’s Kindle and people will buy it. So, you don’t have any excuse. Just pick a niche, browse the requirements on YouTube, and create an account on freelancing platforms like Fiverr, Upwork, etc. If your profile is captivating, then clients will look for you.

Online teaching and coaching services
You can make money by teaching others what you know. Don’t tell me that you don’t know anything. Look inward, and you will certainly find one thing that you know how to do very well.

Nowadays, people pay to learn everything. Last year, I saw a seminar that was titled “How to Stop Your Husband from Cheating.” And guess what! The attendees paid 20,000 naira to get the Zoom meeting link.

Recently, I connected with someone who teaches women how to calculate and monitor their menstrual cycle. She charges a fee of one thousand naira. So, imagine if she gets 100 students in a month that is a whopping N100,000 in earnings. Most people who work a 9-to-5 job do not make much money. If you have a skill, create tutorial videos and publish them on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, etc. Don’t worry if your views are low; one day they will increase.

Conclusion
The good news is that starting a business can be an incredibly rewarding and lucrative experience. But it isn’t always easy—there are certain challenges that you may face, and you will need a bit of hard work and dedication to overcome them.

In order to succeed, there are some marketing strategies you must apply while running a business from home. A verbal conversation is still one of the most powerful advertising tools available for small businesses today.

Use social media frequently. Most people are on those platforms, so take your product there. If you can afford to pay influencers to promote your business on their walls, then that’s fine. Alternatively, plead with your friends and family to share and recommend your goods to their audiences.

Finally, there are so many unique opportunities out there, but before you jump in, don’t forget to find the perfect business idea that suits your skills and talents. If you have to follow someone, “abeg follow who know road oooo…” Otherwise, you will end up wasting your time and resources.
