UK may ban foreign workers that can’t earn £33,000 yearly

In its bid to cut down on immigration, the United Kingdom Government is considering raising the salary threshold that any intending migrant should qualify to earn upon arrival in Britain.

According to the conditions of Skilled Worker Visa, the minimum salary for the type of work a migrant will be doing on arrival is whichever is the highest out of the following three options:

  • £26,200 per year
  • £10.75 per hour
  • the ‘going rate’ for the type of work you’ll be doing

Home Secretary Suella Braverman and her deputy Robert Jenrick had wanted to lift the salary threshold, but were overruled after kick back from the Treasury.

Currently, foreign workers have to meet a £26,000 per annum salary threshold to move to Britain.

But the Home Office wanted to raise this to £33,000 – which is the average wage of a worker in Britain. By lifting the salary threshold for foreign workers from £26,000 to £33,000, No. 10 believes it will disqualify many intending immigrants and bring down immigration figures which had reportedly hit one million as of last week.

More worries for foreign students
Meanwhile, the UK SUN had reported that foreign students will be banned from bringing family over to Britain in an immigration crackdown being announced this week.

A string of alarmed Tory MPs have broken cover to call for Rishi Sunak to get a grip on the rocketing numbers.

Scrambling to get ahead of the bad news, ministers are expected to announce the immigration clampdown on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The crackdown will see all masters students and many other postgraduate students banned from bringing family over.

The ban will not apply to PhD students, whose courses usually last between three and five years and are very highly skilled.
