VIDEO: I’ll show you the stuff I’m made of -Lagos illegal abattoir operator threatens neighbours

A resident of Lagos State who was arrested, allegedly for turning his home in the Iju area into an unauthorised slaughterhouse, has threatened to deal with those who reported him to the authorities.

This violates environmental laws and endangers public health, the authorities say.

According to a statement released by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the illegal abattoir was discovered at No. 12, Alfred Williams Street, Iju Station, following reports from concerned citizens.

The suspect allegedly began the operation after the state government indefinitely shut down the Oko Oba Abattoir in Agege due to unhygienic practices.

The Lagos State Ministry of Environment’s enforcement team swiftly intervened, sealed off the premises, and took the suspect into custody.

Wahab, via his official post on X, warned that such actions violate the government’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental abuse.

“This operation was a danger to the entire neighbourhood,” Wahab said, adding that the suspect sought to profit through unsanitary means.

He praised local residents for their vigilance in exposing the illegal activity and urged more citizens to report environmental violations through the proper channels.

The closure of the Oko Oba Abattoir had earlier been announced on June 20, when Wahab personally visited the facility and decried the poor sanitary conditions and unsafe practices taking place there.

The commissioner reaffirmed the state’s commitment to environmental safety and encouraged public cooperation in curbing illicit activities that compromise hygiene and health standards.
