What taking a break, travelling do to your health!

A Consultant Neuro-psychiatrist, Dr. Maymunah Yusuf-Kadiri, says going on vacation or travelling improves mental health, enhances overall wellbeing and helps to reduce stress.

Kadiri, the Medical Director of Pinnacle Medical Services Ltd., Lagos, stated this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday. According to her, travelling or going on vacation offers the brain time to rest and recover, thus improving performance and productivity.

The neuro-psychiatrist also said that exposure to new cultures, languages and landscapes could help stimulate the brain and enhance creativity.

“Travelling makes people to encounter different ways of thinking and living, which can inspire new ideas, boost creativity for problem-solving and innovation upon returning to normal daily life.

“The change of scenery, new experiences and taking a break from daily responsibilities help to lower cortisol levels, which is the body’s primary stress hormone, thereby reducing stress.

“Being in a new environment can also interrupt the routine stressors and provide a sense of escape and relaxation, with improved mood, level of happiness and satisfaction.

“Changing environment, especially one that is relaxing and free from everyday stressors, can improve sleep quality,” she said.

The medical expert also stated that exposure to natural sunlight, fresh air and physical activity during travel could help regulate sleep patterns and enhance better rest.

According to her, vacation could also boost confidence, broaden perspective to help individuals better manage their life challenges, enhance social connections, reduce feelings of isolation and foster a sense of connection with the global community.
