Two students of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) and another male suspect have been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command for alleged murder of two young men and charges of cultism.
The official statement released Friday [today] by the Bauchi State Police Command Spokesperson, SP Ahmed Mohammed Walki, stated that the three suspects were arrested after the discovery of the bodies of two young men, which were allegedly dumped on the outskirts of Kuhu Village.
The suspects, identified by the PPRO as Hoomvez Martins Nyelong (27), Daniel Audu Adamu (26), and Maigari Inuwa (29), are alleged to be members of a cult group responsible for the murders.
According to the statement by the PPRO, “At approximately 9:20 AM on February 18, 2024, a distress call was received at the Durum outstation from a whistleblower residing in Kuhu village, Durum ward, Bauchi LGA.
“The caller reported that he came across the lifeless body of a young man, whose identity is still unknown, lying in a bush on the outskirts of Kuhu Village.
“After receiving the report, the patrol team from the C Division quickly went to the scene. They took the body to ATBU Teaching Hospital in Bauchi for a medical examination, where a doctor confirmed that the person was dead.
“The next day, another distress call came from the same location. The patrol team, led by the DPO C Division, went to the scene again. They noticed footprints and found another body. This second body was also taken to the hospital, where a doctor confirmed the person’s death.
“Both bodies were examined, and no visible signs of injury, violence, or strangulation were found on either of them. However, the second body had its eyes forcefully punctured.
“Since there were no means of identification found with the bodies, they were deposited at the mortuary.”
Still commenting on the case, the Command spokesperson stated that, “Prior to receiving information about the second body, on February 18, 2024, at 6:30 PM, the three suspects were caught wandering in that bush. Upon their arrest, they couldn’t provide a satisfactory explanation for their presence in the area.
“On further probing, we discovered that the first suspect, Hoomvez Martins Nyelong, was the one who had dumped the first corpse in the early hours of Sunday, 18/2/2024.”
Reports also alleged that exhibits, which include pieces of razor blades, sticks with blood stains, bottles of alcohol, torn trousers, among others, were found at the scene.
While the investigation is currently ongoing, the Commissioner of Police for Bauchi State Command, CP Auwal Musa Mohammed, urged the residents of the state to remain vigilant in their communities. He also emphasized the importance of promptly reporting any suspicious activities to the police to prevent potential incidents of lawlessness, loss of life, or damage to property.
