53rd Convocation: UNN to confer degrees on 11,143 students

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) will confer degrees on 11,143 graduating students at its 53rd convocation ceremony, scheduled for December 20-21, 2024.

Acting vice-chancellor of the university, Prof Polycarp Chigbu, who announced this on Tuesday at a pre-Convocation press conference held at the Enugu campus of the University, revealed that 195 students will receive first-class honors degrees.

He added that out of the total, 4,165 graduates will receive 2nd class Honours upper division, 5,197 will be awarded 2nd Class Honours (Lower division), while 7?659 will be conferred with 3rd Class Honours, 22 with Pass, and 889 unclassified.

The unclassified degrees, according to him, are awarded to graduates of some courses, such as medicine, pharmacy and veterinary medicine which are not usually classified into first, second or third class.

Chigbu also announced that a total of 1,356 postgraduate degrees and diplomas from the University of Nigeria will be awarded at the 53rd convocation ceremony.

Giving a further breakdown, the acting VC said: “431 persons will earn the Doctorate, while 848 persons will be awarded the Master’s Degrees. A total of 77 postgraduate diplomas of the university will also be awarded at the convocation.

“Two persons have been found deserving of the honorary doctorate degrees of the University and will be decorated accordingly.

“In keeping with our tradition, two deserving retired professors of the university will be elevated to the distinguished status of Emeritus Professor. They are Prof. Felix Eczema Onah(Faculty of the Social Sciences) and Prof. Isaac Uxoma Asuzu(Faculty of Veterinary Medicine),” he said.

He, however, announced that the convocation lecture would be delivered by the national president of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe with the governor of Adamawa State, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Fintri chairing the event.

Highlighting his achievements since he assumed office four months ago, the Acting Vice Chancellor said that he has been able to solve the perennial energy problem that had been bedeviling the institution over the years.

According to him, there was chaotic energy crisis resulting in power rationing, illegal connections, energy theft and irresponsible power usage but today they have been able to grapple with it.

“Today, our inventiveness has seen not only a lasting solution of the crisis, we have gained deep insights into sustainable energy solutions for the future. The illegal connections, energy theft, irresponsible use and dereliction of duty that have sabotaged electricity supply in UNN have been diagnosed and cured to a very large extent,” he said.
