Six persons have died, and 60 others injured in an auto crash involving an articulated vehicle and a commercial bus in Kogi.
The Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC), Kogi State Command, confirmed the incident.
According to the FRSC Commander in charge of Kogi Sector Command, Samuel Oyedeji, who confirmed the incident to newsmen, the fatal accident occurred at about 3.00pm on Tuesday.
Oyedeji said the accident, which occurred at Zone-8 Junction, Lokoja, was due to high speed, adding that six persons died, while 60 were injured.
He said, “Our officers, in collaboration with the Police and NSCDC personnel, have rushed the injured to Kogi Specialist Hospital and the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Lokoja, for medical attention.
“The corpses of the six have also been deposited at the Federal University Teaching Hospital morgue.
“We leant the truck from Bauchi was heading to Enugu State before the unfortunate incident occurred around Zone 8 roundabout in Lokoja, Kogi,” Oyedeji said.
“It was a chaotic and horrific sight. People were trapped, and it took hours to clear the scene,” said a local resident.
He said that the Enugu-bound articulated vehicle apparently lost control while on high speed and rammed into the other vehicle.
The FRSC Sector Commander urged drivers to always exercise caution, especially when operating heavy-duty vehicles.
He called on the government to intensify efforts at addressing road infrastructure challenges as well as enforcement of traffic regulations.
As investigations continue into the cause of the accident, Nigerians are once again reminded of the shared responsibility to ensure safer roads for all.
