Accident claims 5 as driver sleeps off while driving

The spokesperson of Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps [FRSC], Florence Okpe, has disclosed how five passengers lost their lives, while 12 others sustained injuries when the driver of one of the two vehicles involved in the accident slept off on the wheel.

The accident occurred on Tuesday [today] around the Foursquare Church, Ajebo, on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The accident which occurred at about 1:07PM involved a Mazda bus with registration number SMK685YG and Howo truck with registration number ZE-1210G.

Okpe said the driver of the Mazda bus reportedly slept off due to fatigue, lost control, and rammed into the moving truck.

This was disclosed in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday.

Those injured have been taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere Remo in Ikenne Local Government Area of the state for medical treatment, while the bodies of the dead have been deposited at the FOS Morgue, Ipara Remo, the statement said.

It reads in part, “The fatal crash occurred at about 1307 hrs on Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

“A total of 18 persons were involved which comprised of 10 male adults and 08 female adults and 12 people were injured (10 male and 02 female) and unfortunately, 05 persons were recorded dead from the crash ( 04 male and 01 female adult).

“02 vehicles were involved with registration numbers ZE-1210G HOWO TRUCK and a Mazda bus SMK685YG.

“The suspected causes of the fatal crash were tyre bust, speed and fatigue which led to loss of control because the driver slept off on the wheel and ran into a moving truck.

“The injured victims were taken to Victory Hospital Ogere while the corpses were deposited at FOS Morgue, Ipara Remo.”

The statement noted that the Sector Commander, FRSC Ogun Sector Command, Anthony Uga, advised motorists to shun speed and always use good tyres.

Uga, while emphasising the issue of fatigue, urged drivers to always create time to rest.

He also advised passengers to monitor any abnormalities they notice in the drivers, including dozing while driving.

He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, while he also prayed for speedy recovery for the injured.
