Africa’s first chartered accountant Akintola Williams dies aged 104

The Doyen of Accounting in Nigeria, Pa Akintola Williams, has died at the age of 104.

It was gathered that the first indigenous Nigeria Chartered Accountant died in his sleep in the early hours of Monday, September 11, 2023.
Born in 1919, the late Pa Williams studied Accounting at the University of London and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1947.

Upon returning to Nigeria, he established his own accounting firm in 1952, named Akintola Williams & Co. and now known as Deloitte & Touche.

His influence extended far beyond his firm’s success; he was a staunch advocate for advancing the accounting profession in Nigeria.

As a founding member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Pa Williams served as its president from 1963 to 1965. He was also a member of the National Board of Accountants and Auditors.

Throughout his illustrious career, Pa Williams received numerous accolades, including the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) and the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM). He was also recognized as a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

His contributions to the field of Accounting and his commitment to its development in Nigeria have left an indelible mark, making him a true doyen of the profession and a source of pride for the nation.
