A 6-member panel has been put in place to investigate allegations of human rights abuses at the Maroko Police Station.
Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 2 Command, Lagos, AIG Fayoade M. Adegoke, put the panel in place.
This is contained in a statement by SP Umma T. Ayuba, Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Onikan.
This follows the circulation of a viral video in which a woman claimed she was unlawfully detained in the station’s cell along with several male and underage detainees.
The panel, chaired by Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Ajao S. Adewale, who heads the Zonal Criminal Investigation Department (ZCID), includes a diverse range of professionals to ensure a balanced and thorough probe.
The members are ACP Ogunsakin Gbenga, head of the Zonal Intelligence Department; Mr. Emma Nndozie, Group Crime Editor of Vanguard Newspaper; Comrade Prince Adeoye Adewunmi, a human rights activist; Ivy Kanu of TVC News; and Barrister Blessing Afe, a lawyer and social worker.
The panel was formally inaugurated by AIG Adegoke at the M.D. Abubakar Conference Hall, Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Onikan, Lagos, at 12:00 PM today, October 4, 2024.
According to Ayuba, this investigation aligns with the Nigerian Police Force’s commitment to upholding human rights and addressing gender-related concerns, reflecting the ongoing reforms in the force under its contemporary leadership.
