A fresh assault on a Police Station in Oba, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been recorded. Heavily armed attackers are touted to have launched the attack.
This incident marked the third attack on law enforcement in the region in recent times, following earlier assaults in Nnewi and Nnobi in August, which resulted in the deaths of several policemen.
On Tuesday morning, reports surfaced that a police corporal, whose identity has not been disclosed, was fatally shot during the attack, which took place in the early hours.
The Anambra State Police confirmed the incident, stating that the officer was killed after the assailants, believed to be separatist militants, threw a petrol bomb into the police station.
“The suspected armed secessionist group began shooting sporadically in an attempt to gain access to the police station and threw petrol bombs at the facility, causing some offices to catch fire, including the Oba Civic Center.
“Tragically, a police corporal who was critically injured succumbed to his wounds, while the fire was extinguished with the assistance of other on-duty officers and a joint security response team,” said State Command Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, to the Daily Post.
Ikenga also announced that operations commenced this morning, led by joint security forces that include the Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and other security agencies, conducting a coordinated offensive within Oba and its surrounding areas.
He added that Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, described the attack as an invasion of security installations and an act of aggression against law enforcement personnel, considering it a direct challenge to the nation’s sovereignty. He vowed to bring those responsible for this heinous act to justice.
