Archbishop frowns at children’s neglect of aged parents

The Catholic Church on Sunday  celebrated the elderly, urging more care for them by children, grandchildren and the entire society.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Catholic Church celebrated 2024 World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly.

The event featured holy mass, gifts and visits to homes for the elderly by the church members.

It had the theme: “Do Not Cast Us off at Old Age”.

It was aimed at reminding governments, individuals, groups and organisations of the need to care for the elderly.

At the Holy Cross Catholic Cathedral, Lagos, the Archbishop, Most. Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, felicitated the elderly, urging the society to care more for them.

The archbishop said: “We felicitate our grandparents and all the elderly for witnessing this day.”

Martins frowned at neglect of parents and grandparents at old age.

He urged the younger generation to keep in touch with their parents and grandparents to cater for them adequately.

The cleric said that, by showing care and love to parents and the elderly, younger people would attract God’s blessings of long life.

He prayed for the elderly, saying: “May this special day be filled with joy and deep appreciation for all that you are.

“You are treasures to our families and to the society. We cherish your guidance and celebrate your experiences.

“Your golden years are a blessing to our society, and we are grateful for the love and memories you share with us.” (NAN)
