Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi has acquired cytological equipment.
The equipment is for the treatment of cervical cancer.
According to the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Stephen Hwande, cervical cancer typically progresses from infection to pre-malignant lesions before reaching a severe stage.
The newly acquired cytological equipment is designed to effectively address cancer at the pre-malignant stage.
Dr. Hwande spoke after presenting gifts to the first baby of the year alongside Governor Hyacinth Alia.
In addition to the cervical cancer initiative, Dr. Hwande said the hospital has its full restoration of endoscopy, a medical procedure used to identify ulcers.
Furthermore, he said the hospital plans to carry out the first set of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) procedures in March.
On the recent outbreak of Lassa fever, Dr. Hwande said five suspected cases, including one confirmed case, were isolated at the hospital’s treatment centre.
Efforts are underway to trace individuals who may have come in contact with the affected persons, he said.
The first baby of the year, Master Fanen Taave, weighing 3.0kg, was born at 2 am on New Year’s Day.
