Popular crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly called Bobrisky would be released from prison on Monday after serving a six-month sentence for mutilating naira notes.
The sentence was imposed by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos in March 2024.
The court’s decision highlighted the need to protect the integrity of the naira and serve as a deterrent against currency defacement.
Bobrisky was convicted after a video emerged of him tearing naira notes at a party, an act deemed in violation of Central Bank of Nigeria regulations. Despite appeals for leniency based on his entertainment career and social media influence, Justice Awogboro upheld the sentence to reinforce the law.
As Bobrisky prepares for his return, his supporters are expressing enthusiasm on social media, while the case continues to fuel discussions about currency regulation and the influence of public figures.
