Bystander killed in Nsukka amid Police altercation involving sex worker

A fatal shooting occurred in Nsukka, Enugu State, resulting in the death of a young man named Amuche.

The alleged incident reportedly happened on Sunday night at the University town of Nsukka, in Nsukka Local Government Area of the state.

The incident, our correspondent gathered on Tuesday, took place on Echara Road, where a group of plainclothes policemen from Nsukka Urban Police Division were reportedly socialising.

According to eyewitness’ accounts, one of the officers allegedly fondled a commercial sex worker while dancing with her, leading to an altercation that ended in the unintended death of Amuche. The identity of the officer involved has not been disclosed.

“She alerted the manager of the chalet and the manager had a heated argument with the policeman,” said an eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“In the process, one of them slapped the other. At that point, the manager went inside the chalet and mobilised some boys who were working there.

“The manager then slapped the policeman when he returned with the boys. It was at that point that other policemen who were in company of the one dancing with the alleged commercial sex worker, joined the fracas to rescue their embattled colleague.

“That was when one of them pulled an AK-47 rifle from their car and shot into air to disperse the crowd that gathered following the chaotic situation. A stray bullet then hit Amuche, who was playing snooker at the chalet when the incident started.

“The victim was about to leave the venue when he was hit by the bullet. The policemen also whisked away the manager of the chalet on the ground that he assaulted their colleague,” the witness said.

The incident, however, sparked a protest as irate youths carried Amuche’s corpse and protested to the Nsukka Police Division where they were allegedly asked to go and deposit the body in the morgue.

Efforts to get the Police reaction were unsuccessful, as the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, didn’t take his calls as oft the time of filing this report.
