Copa América: Drake loses $300K bet as Argentina beat Canada 2-0

Canadian hip-hop star Drake has lost a whopping $300,000 after an audacious bet on Canada winning the Copa America semi-final game against Argentina went burst.

Used to betting, luck did not favour the singer this time as Canada fell to Lionel Messi’s Argentina 2-0.

On Tuesday, Drake revealed his bet ticket on his Instagram story.

According to pundits, with betting odds at 9.6-to-1, the bet could have netted him $2.88 million.

As he shared his ticket, Drake tagged the betting agency, saying humorously, “This could get Messi,” with a small Canadian flag.

Indeed, Canada’s journey to the semi-final has been a surprising success story in this year’s tournament.

Under the guidance of head coach Jesse Marsch, the team entered the Copa América ranked 11th out of 16 teams, based on FIFA rankings.

It is Canada’s debut appearance in the prestigious South American tournament, with the national team aiming for its first major title since the 1990 North American Nations Cup.

The match was the second time Canada and Argentina would be meeting in Copa América, with Argentina winning their group stage encounter 2-0 on June 20.

Historically, the two nations have faced each other just once before in a 2010 friendly that saw Argentina triumph 5-0.

Messi, who recently recovered from a thigh injury, played in the semi-final.

The 37-year-old superstar sat out Argentina’s final group game against Peru but returned to play the full 90 minutes in their quarter-final victory over Ecuador.
