Couple, others die in accident on Sagamu Expressway

A young man, his wife and a passenger have died in a crash involving a vehicle and a motorcycle which occurred along Sagamu/Ogijo Expressway in Sagamu, close to Lafarge Company, Ogun State, on Saturday, October 10, at about 9pm.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state police command, SP Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the incident, said that the victims were promptly taken to a private hospital in Sagamu where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

The incident involved a Foton truck, with registration number EKY 778 XM; a Space Wagon vehicle with registration number AM 299 AHD which was driven by one Wahab Ogunyemi; and a Bajaj motorcycle with registration number JGB 265 WG.

The accident was caused by the driver of the Foton truck who is currently at large.

It was gathered that the motorcycle involved in the accident was ridden by the husband, identified as Moses Ekpolo, aged 25, with his wife, 19-year-old Josephine Ekpolo, on the seat behind him, while the third victim, Kolawole Moshood, aged 44, was in the Space Wagon vehicle.

According to information gathered, the driver of the Foton truck, who drove recklessly, suddenly lost control, left his lane and collided with the motorcycle from behind when they were all heading towards the same direction, going from Ogijo inward Sagamu.

The impact of the truck on the motorcycle caused it to forcefully hit the Space Wagon car, resulting in severe injuries to the couple and one of the passengers in the Space Wagon vehicle.

The motorcycle immediately became a wreck while the Space Wagon also got seriously damaged, it was further learnt.

Odutola said the bodies of the victims had been deposited in a mortuary.

The PPRO added that all the involved vehicles and the motorcycle were towed to the Motor Traffic Division office for safekeeping and vehicle inspection.

She stated further that traffic policemen from the Sagamu Division visited the accident scene, took photo evidence, and managed to clear the obstruction to restore the flow of traffic.
