Customer allegedly assaults Eko DisCo official

A man named Olajide Aro from the Iwaya area of Lagos has been brought before a Lagos State Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba for allegedly assaulting a worker from Eko Electricity Distribution Company, EKEDC.

The charges against him include assault, breach of peace, obstruction of legitimate duties, and causing physical injuries.

According to the charges, on July 18, 2024, Olajide and others in Ogbe Close, Iwaya, prevented an EKEDC worker from disconnecting the power supply of consumers who owed money.

This led to a heated argument during which Olajide allegedly assaulted the EKEDC worker by punching him in the face, causing a cut on his lips, tearing his shirt, and pushing him.

The incident was reported to the Sabo Police Station, and Olajide was arrested and questioned.

At the police station, he confessed to the assault, stating that he did not mean to do it, but things got out of hand.

The prosecutor informed the court that the alleged offence was committed on July 18, 2024, contravening Sections 411, 168(d), 116(1), and 173 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

The prosecutor also cited the complainant’s statement, the torn shirt, and statements from the investigating officer as evidence.

The plea of the defendant was not taken, and Magistrate Patrick Nwaka ordered a bail sum of N200,000 and two sureties, who are residents of Lagos State, to be provided.

Additionally, the defendant was remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre until he met the bail terms.

The case has been adjourned to September 11, 2024.
