Death certificate necessary after loved one’s death -NPC boss

The Oyo State Director, National Population Commission (NPC), Mr. Olayide Adebayo, has decried Nigerians’ attitude to obtaining death certificates for their departed loved ones.

Adebayo, who said 158,000 deaths were registered in the state in 2024, disclosed this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Friday.

According to him, a greater percentage of the population fails to obtain death certificates when they lose their loved ones.

“They only come forward when it’s needed to claim the deceased’s entitlements.

“Our people need to have a change of mindset and do things rightly and as stipulated by law,” he said.

He, however, said 333,904 births were registered in the state in 2024.

According to him, 272,090 births were registered online, while 61,814 were done across NPC local government offices.

“Unlike birth registration, online death registration is not available.

“Birth certificates are, however, issued in all local governments in the state.

“Citizens should, therefore, endeavour to make use of this and not wait till when there’s an urgent need before coming forward to get it,” he said.

The state director says the commission is collaborating with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to synergise the issuance of birth certificates and the National Identification Number (NIN).

“This will make the process and time management for both collections faster and easier.

“The process is ongoing and once it’s finalised, it will start.

“This process is also what’s delaying the issuance of birth certificates to those who registered online,” he said. (NAN)
