Delta approves 5 mobile courts to try environment law breakers

The Director General of the Warri Uvwie and Environs Special Area Development Agency (WUEDA), Hon. Prince Godwin Ejinyere, has announced the approval by the Delta State Judiciary of the establishment of five mobile courts within the Agency’s jurisdiction.

These courts are tasked with prosecuting and imposing penalties on individuals violating environmental laws, a crucial step towards enhancing efficient waste management in the Oil City.

Prince Ejinyere shared this development during a courtesy visit by the Chairman and members of the State Waste Management Board to his office in Effurun.

He highlighted the unique approach of the Mobile Courts, tailored to best practices, ensuring residents’ compliance with environmental laws. Offenders engaging in activities such as indiscriminate refuse dumping or improper vehicle parking will face significant penalties within the existing legal framework.

The WUEDA DG emphasized the agency’s extensive efforts in conducting awareness campaigns through television, radio, and social media to educate the public about the rules and regulations guiding its activities. He asserted that a paradigm shift was underway, stating, “It will no longer be business as usual.”

Prince Ejinyere informed the Waste Management Board team about prior meetings with Private Sector Participants (PSP) to strategize effective waste management in the agency’s mandate areas, emphasizing that “cleanliness is next to godliness.”

Drawing a metaphorical parallel to a football match, he urged stakeholders, including the Board, Local Government Councils, PSPs, and residents, to actively contribute to revitalizing the metropolis, likening it to a collaborative effort on the field for a victorious outcome.

Hon. Ejinyere expressed the joint commitment of WUEDA and the Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency to elevate Warri and Asaba to centers of excellence comparable to Lagos and Calabar. He commended the Board for its performance, pledging cooperation towards shared goals.

In response, Hon. Emmanuel Chinye, Chairman of the Delta State Waste Management Board, conveyed gratitude for the warm reception and discussed avenues for collaboration between the two institutions.

Accompanying Hon. Chinye were Hon. Matthew Mofe Edema, Hon. Felix Erhimedafe, Hon. Cosmos Igbinije, Mr. Michael Esegha (Director of Operations), and other staff members of the Waste Management Board. The entourage from WUEDA included Mr. Simon Esi (Director of Administration and Finance), Engr. Bemingo Ofoeyenor (Director of Projects), Chief Civil Engineer Obruche Okeme, and other agency staff.
