The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has issued a stern warning to content creators, cautioning them against producing, promoting, distributing, and streaming unauthorized content, specifically same-sex content, on social media platforms.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Board reiterated that publicly showcasing same-sex relationships in Nigeria is a criminal offense.
Additionally, the NFVCB emphasised that all film and video content, including skits and music videos, must be submitted to the Board for classification before distribution or exhibition on any platform.
Failure to comply may result in legal consequences, the Board warned.
The statement partly read: “the attention of the National Film and Video Censors Board has been drawn to the activities of some unscrupulous “Filmmakers/Content creators” who are clearly flouting the provisions of the country’s law with impunity by the production, promotion, distribution and streaming of prohibited and unapproved contents especially same-sex content on social media Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook, Twitter) and other online platforms.
“Filmmakers/Content Creators should be reminded that it is an offence to directly or indirectly make public show (Exhibition) of same-sex relationship in Nigeria.
“It is also an offence to distribute or exhibit any Film or Video content including skits and musical videos on any platform without recourse to the National Film and Video Censors Board for classification,” it noted.
The Board, “therefore wishes to state categorically that we are working with relevant security agencies to track the individuals and production companies involved, and will stop at nothing to make sure they face the full wrath of the law.”
