ECOWAS Commission decries deaths among Nigerian hunger protesters

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission days it has been attentively observing the recent protests in Nigeria, expressing deep regrets over the escalation of violence during these demonstrations.

The commission in a statement has noted with concern the reports of violent clashes, which have led to the tragic loss of lives among protesters.

In addition to the fatalities, “there have been troubling reports of alleged looting and the destruction of both public and private properties. These incidents have raised significant alarm within the ECOWAS Commission, highlighting the need for urgent measures to address the situation and restore order,” the statement added.

The ECOWAS Commission said it remains committed to supporting efforts aimed at resolving the conflict peacefully and encourages all parties involved to engage in dialogue to prevent further escalation. The commission’s focus is on ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens, and it urges for a resolution that will foster stability and harmony within Nigeria.
