As Muslims celebrate this year’s Eid-el-Kabir, the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has urged residents to bag and containerise all wastes that would be created during and after the celebration, in order to maintain a clean environment.
The Authority pledges to ensure that the celebrations are observed in a clean and healthy environment, and has therefore issued a strong warning against all sorts of indiscriminate dumping of wastes on road medians, waterways/canals, uncompleted constructions, and other unapproved sites.
In a statement, LAWMA’s Executive Director of Finance, Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, revealed that extensive measures had been taken to guarantee a clean and hygienic environment throughout the celebration period as PSP operators have been assigned to maintain a round-the-clock schedule to ensure a clean city.
Adebiyi underlined LAWMA’s resolve to fight inappropriate garbage disposal practices that exacerbate environmental deterioration in the city, particularly during the Eid holiday.
He said that the management team members tasked with keeping an eye on the environment over the holiday season would have their names and phone numbers published by the Authority in national dailies.
In order to protect the lives of sanitation workers who would be busy cleaning the roads, motorists were urged to ply the roads with caution, while Lagos residents are asked to phone the LAWMA toll-free lines, 07080601020 or 617, for waste management-related matters.
