Emefiele secures N50m bail

The embattled former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has been granted bail.

He is standing trial for alleged abuse of office and fraud to the tune of $4.5 billion and another N2.8 billion.

Justice Rahman Oshodi of a Lagos Special Offences Court, Ikeja, granted him a N50 million bail.

The judge while ruling on the bail application yesterday, granted Emefiele to bail in the sum N50 million bail with two sureties in like sum.

It would be recalled that the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had on April 8 arraigned Emefiele and his co defendant , Henry Isioma Omoile, on a 23 counts charge bordering on abuse of office, accepting gratifications, corrupt demand, receiving property fraudulently obtained and conferring corrupt advantage.

Omoile was arraigned on a three-count charge bordering on acceptance of gift by agents.

However, the judge ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and have evidence of three years tax payment with the Lagos State Government.

He also ordered that the sureties must show proper identification and they must be registered in the Lagos State Bail Management System.

Justice Oshodi held that the court was satisfied with the bail conditions of N1 million earlier granted to the second defendants, Omoile who is standing in another alleged fraud charge before Justice Olufunke Sule-Hamzat of a Lagos High Court sitting in Yaba.

The judge directed the defendants counsel, Abdulakeem Labi-Lawal to furnished the court with tue bail documents of the sister court

He ordered that the documents must be transferred to Special Offences Court and it must also be registered in the Lagos State Bail Management System.
