An Associate Professor at the University of Lagos, Prof. Tunde Adeoye, has advised the new Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, on what to do.
Adeoye, who is also Senior Lecturer in the university’s Department of Economics, gave the advice while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Ota, Ogun.
“Alausa has to concentrate on how to improve funding for the education sector.
“There is the need for the new Minister of Education to see how funding of education and facilities across the universities will improve,” he said.
Adeoye added that Alausa needed to engage President Bola Tinubu in discussion on how to ensure increased budgetary allocation to education.
“Budgetary allocation to education in the country is very small. That’s very unfortunate. But we can effect a change.
“They should look for ways to see that our education sector that has been pushed to the background starts developing again.
“The only way to improve education development is to finance the education sector.”
“The minister should concentrate his efforts on how all those things that can lead to development in the education system should come to the sector.
“The minister should not engage in playing politics with our education,” he said.
Adeoye urged the minister to also ensure an increase in the remunerations of lecturers and teachers to boost their morale.
He also emphasised the need for more training of lecturers and teachers because “they can not give what they do not have”. (NAN)
