The Federal Government has announced the forthcoming launch of HPV vaccine to combat cervical cancer.
The announcement, made by the Coordination Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, was made during the quarterly meeting of the Northern Traditional Leaders Committee (NTLC) held in Abuja on Wednesday, where Primary Health Care (PHC) services were the central focus.
Pate revealed that government is planning to engage traditional leaders from across the nation in the vaccination efforts against preventable diseases as an initiative that includes the convening of a national traditional rulers’ conference.
The HPV vaccine will be launched specifically for school-age children, with the aim of protecting them from cervical cancer.
Reassuring the Nigerian public, Pate emphasized the safety and effectiveness of the HPV vaccine, highlighting the availability of the necessary healthcare personnel for its administration.
The minister commended the elders for their unwavering commitment to the project from its inception despite some persistent challenges, saying it was significant for the progress that had been achieved through their active involvement.
While addressing the gathering virtually during his travels to assess a recent diphtheria outbreak, Dr. Fasai Shuab, executive director and chief executive, NPHCDA, lauded the success of immunization campaigns in the northern region.
Shuaib also expressed concern over the high incidence of diphtheria in the region saying, “It is disheartening to learn that over 73% of recorded diphtheria cases involve children aged one to 14 years, and 80% of those affected have not received any immunizations.
“This underscored the urgent need for the NTLC and all stakeholders to intensify community mobilization, raise public awareness and promote acceptance of vaccination services.”
Articulating the quarterly meeting, NTLC Chairman, and Emir of Argungu, Sama’ila Muhammed Mera, said it serves as a platform for assessing all PHC activities conducted between July and October 2023, stressing that, “It is an opportunity for us to evaluate our progress, identify areas for improvement, and to chart a course for the future.”
