Guard against fire incident while cooking Yuletide meals, specialist urges

A former Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Dr. Ibrahim Liman, has urged Nigerians to be safety cautious while cooking during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Liman made this known during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that fire safety precautions were necessary at all times and not only during festivities.

He, however, stressed the need for extra care during the Yuletide season, stating that the period was known for high rate of cooking of all types.

The expert and CEO of Assetbow Ltd, a fire consulting firm, advised those who use cooking gas to avoid leaving gas cylinders and burners unattended to.

“Turn off gas cylinders when not in use and ensure cylinder hoses are appropriately connected to the cooker to avoid escape of gas that could lead to explosion.

“Parents should look after their younger children to avoid them playing with lighters or match sticks,” he said.

Liman also urged residents to purchase fire extinguishers for prompt response to fire emergencies.

According to him, purchasing the right type of fire extinguisher will help tackle fires before the arrival of firefighters.

“There are different fire extinguishers for different types of fire. So, it is important to purchase the right one because the use of the wrong extinguisher might not cushion the fire effect,” Liman said.

He further called on Nigerians to identify the closest fire stations to them and timely report any fire emergencies.

The fire expert wished Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year in advance, advising them to express love during the season.(NAN)
