Gunmen kill four policemen, POS operator in Imo

Some gunmen have reportedly killed four policemen on checkpoints in Imo state on Monday evening.

The incident happened on a police checkpoint along the Owerri-Onitsha road, around 6:30pm.

Eyewitnesses have described the incident as “horrific” and “unacceptable”, wondering how long would the spilling of blood continue in Imo State.

In addition to the policemen, the gunmen also shot a female Point of Sale (POS) operator and several pedestrians, who were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The attack took place at the Blossom Hotel police checkpoint, near SaveMore Market Place in Irete, where the gunmen opened fire on the officers conducting a stop and search operation.

According to eyewitness, “They also shot dead a female Point Of Sale operator and some pedestrians who were taken unawares. All the people around ran away for fear of being hit by stray bullets.”

Another eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, attributed the attack to individuals enforcing the Monday sit-at-home order.
