In a brazen attack on Friday evening, six gunmen in a Sienna SUV targeted a Police checkpoint at Opobo Junction along the Aba-Ikot Ekpene Expressway in Abia State, fatally shooting two officers and injuring another.
The assault occurred during a routine stop-and-search operation, prompting a swift response from multiple police patrol teams, eyewitnesses told our reporter.
The incident sparked chaos and panic in the area, forcing shop owners and traders at Ehere market to hastily close their businesses and flee for safety, leaving some goods abandoned.
Witnesses reported seeing multiple police patrol teams rushing to the scene, describing the attack as ‘brazen’.
Recalled that gunmen on May 30 opened fire on a military checkpoint in Obikabia junction in Aba, Abia State.
The terrorists, who also burnt the soldiers’ patrol truck, were said to be enforcing the sit-at-home order declared by IPOB across the South-East region to mark the Biafra Day, which is celebrated annually in the region.
The heavily armed men, clad in black outfits, were seen sporadically firing shots at the junction.
Meanwhile, efforts to speak with the State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka were unsuccessful as she didn’t take her calls or respond to a text message inquiry.
