How Chinese police made Shylock cab driver refund me -Nigerian traveller

A Nigerian Facebook user has narrated his encounter with an extortionate Chinese cab driver and how the Chinese police intervened to make the Shylock driver atone for his misdeed.

Facebook user, Joe Aito, narrates as follows:

I’m in China for a conference and something impressive happened. 11 hours flight, touched down, got into a ‘taxi’…

Apparently it was an illegal taxi. Took a pic of the plate number and the driver said I had to delete it that it’s illegal. I did, knowing fully well how easy it was to retrieve.

Dropped off at the hotel and the taxi bill was pretty high. Too tired to argue + Was tired of using Google translate, I paid.

Casually mentioned the taxi bill to the hotel receptionist hours later and they were gob smacked. Hour later, I get a call that the police is here for me. They had called the police to report the situation and I had to go with the Police to the station.

On my First day here oh. The Nigerian in me was thinking plenty things. Plus all I had heard about China eh.

Anyway, 45 minutes after getting to the police station, the taxi driver showed up and refunded over 80% of what he charged. Walked 5 minutes back to my hotel feeling more assured and at peace. I don’t think

I’ve been to any other country where the Police will give an ear to complaints about being ripped off by a taxi driver.

China: 100
