How students can become globally competitive -Multi-award-winner Emmanuela Ilok

The Female Lead Ambassador of Greensprings IB School, Emmanuela Ilok, has identified three crucial skills every student must possess to excel on a global scale.

The Greensprings IB Diploma programme is a two-year sixth-form programme designed to prepare secondary school students for life in tertiary institutions.

Emmanuela is a Yale Young African Scholars Social Impact Award winner and a Cambridge Outstanding Learner Award winner.

During a panel session at the 10th Annual Parenting Conference by LagosMums, the 2022 Rise Global Winner listed Value-based Education (VbE), effective communication, and a service-oriented mindset as skills that have helped her achieve academic success and win global awards.

She elaborated on the significance of these skills, highlighting the instrumental role played by her parents and the school in cultivating them.

Emmanuela underscored the pivotal role of effective communication in global competitiveness, stressing that this skill empowers individuals to articulate their thoughts to the world, a competence integral to human endeavors.

“At Greensprings School, effective communication is honed in students from an early age through avenues such as internal events, external competitions, and speech and debate clubs, significantly reducing stage fright and instilling confidence in students,” she said.

She further expounded on the second essential skill: moral and ethical values; attributing her good behavior to her parents’ support and her 15-year tenure at Greensprings School, where she internalized the institution’s core values.

The school’s emphasis on fostering responsible digital citizenship and upholding moral values in online interactions, according to her, contributes to character development.

Emmanuela concluded by shedding light on the transformative power of community service. She extolled how engagement in community service activities provides students with a competitive edge, particularly through the IB Diploma Programme, which cultivates civic engagement through Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) projects.

She stressed that a service-oriented approach is vital for global relevance; emphasizing that such activities nurture empathy, make students more altruistic and inclined to make a positive impact in their communities.

With these three essential skills, Emmanuela believes that students would be well-equipped to compete on the global stage.
