Almost everywhere in Nigeria is hot currently, and to worsen it, there is epileptic power supply. In fact, for Lagos residents, experts warn that heat waves come with serious public health implications.
The World Meteorological Organisation defines a heat wave as a period during which the daily maximum temperature exceeds for more than five consecutive days the maximum normal temper- ature by 9 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Celsius).
Experts say heat wave can affect anyone, but the most vulnerable people include children, pregnant women, older people, people with heart or breathing problems; those living with diabetes, people with mobility problems such as stroke; those on certain medicines, among others.
Below are the tips to help you cope during the period:
Stay hydrated: Your body needs water to survive. Drinking enough water every day is an important step in maintaining your health. Also note that some fruits like water melon, cucumber can serve as sources of water. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and hot drinks.
Take cool showers or baths: Frequent cool showers or baths can help bring down the body temperature. Apart from cool showers, staying under air conditioners, if you have light, can help to keep the body cool. You can as we’ll use electric fans, rechargeable fans and hand fans.
Stay indoors: If you do not have anything urgent to do outside, especially when it is very hot, it is advisable to stay indoors to avoid the scorching sun.
Wear loose and light clothes: This is definitely not the period to wear heavy clothes. Loose clothes are breathable, and allows more air into your body. So, wear clothes that are loose-fitting, lightweight and light-coloured. You can also add a sun shade and a hat.
Avoid extra sources of heat: Incandescent light bulbs can generate more heat. Also, eat fresh foods that do not require you to use the oven or stove to prepare.
Limit alcohol intake: Mixing too much sun with alcohol is not a good combination. Alcohol causes dehydration, which can hit especially hard if your body is already struggling to stay cool. So, try to drink in moderation.
Keep your home cool: It’s important to make your home a place you can escape to out of the heat. Make sure windows are covered to protect from direct sunlight, and open your windows when the air feels cooler outside than inside, for example at night.
