How to manage post-harvest losses -Agronomist

A Bauchi-based agronomist, Ilyasu Aliyu-Gital, has urged farmers to adopt optimal preservation techniques to minimise post harvest losses.

Aliyu-Gital said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Thursday in Bauchi.

He said post harvest losses remained a major challenge in the agricultural production, adding that, “the key to reduce losses lies in ensuring crops are ripe before harvest, as premature harvesting can lead to spoilage.

“Farmers should ensure harvested crops are fully matured. Consider hiring someone to guard your field until crops are ripe for harvest.

“Allow crops to thoroughly dry before threshing, especially for those that require it, check moisture content before storing in the bags.

“it is good to ensure storage facilities are free from infestations or infections. Apply appropriate chemicals to preserve produce”.

Aliyu-Gital said that fumigants like post toxin without direct contact with crops, allowed fumes or gasses to handle pest control.

“Fill bags completely and tie tightly to prevent air or oxygen from fueling microorganisms or insects.
