Kaduna nurses afraid to work in troubled LGAs -NANNM

Nurses in Kaduna State under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives [NANNM], have decried the spate of insecurity and poor state of some government-owned hospitals in the state.

Chairman of the Association in Kaduna State, Ishaku Yakubu, at the maiden Zonal Scientific Workshop tagged, ‘Our Nurses, Our Future’, lamented that some LGAs in the state are difficult to access due to activities of bandits.

This situation, according to him has made it impossible for health workers to gain access to health facilities in those areas.

“Health workers are always afraid to go to such areas. Imagine someone that was supposed to provide care being afraid, how will he/she provide quality health care service to patients?”

While he described nurses as critical engine of the health care system and the bedrock of any hospital in Nigeria; he appealed to the state government to improve the security situation across the state to enable them work more efficiently.

Ishaku further lamented that some hospitals in the state including General hospital, Doka; Rural hospital, Kauru; General hospital, Gwantu and Rural Hospital, Zonkwa do not have perimeter fences; making the environment porous for marauders to easily attack and escape as some of the hospitals neither have gates nor security guards.

He therefore stressed the need for government to provide adequate security, erect perimeter fences and provide essential equipment that can health workers can work with. He also appealed to government to implement 100percent CONHESS for all health workers in the state.
