Kidnappers threatened to kill my newborn -Enugu woman abducted on her way to hospital

A nursing mother who was kidnapped on her way to the hospital in Enugu, Mrs. Lovina Chinwendu Igwe, has recounted her ordeal in the hand of her captors.

Speaking with our reporter on Tuesday, Lovina said she feared she would not make it alive going by the trauma she suffered during labour while she was being held captive.

According to her, while in the kidnappers’ den, she had prayed that if they must kill her, they should, at least, spare her baby.

Lovina, who gave birth in the bush under the watch of the Fulani herdsmen who had abducted her, said she never knew they would spare her life since they had demanded N10 million ransom, which they later reduced to N1.6 million.

Her husband paid to secure her freedom, Lovina informed.

“I thank God that I am alive and my baby boy. While I was in the kidnappers’ den, I thought I was going to die. They were demanding N10 million ransom and threatened to kill me if the ransom was not paid.

“All the while, for three days that they held me in the bush, I kept praying that if they must kill me, they should at least spare my baby.

“My anxiety heightened when they threatened to kill my baby first before they kill me. I thank God that I am alive to tell the story,” she said.

She thanked Governor Peter Mbah for taking care of her medical bills at the hospital where she was taken to after she was released by her captors.

She commended the timely intervention of the Commissioner of Police, Uzuegbu, whose men swooped in and went after the kidnappers and caught two of them. “That action saved my life and that of my newborn baby,” Mrs. Igwe said.

“I don’t know how to thank God for His mercies. Also, for Governor Peter Mbah who took me and newborn baby to the hospital and later paid our hospital bills.

“I graciously thank God that I am now safe and sound. I also thank the Commissioner of Police who sent his men after the fleeing kidnappers.”
