The Lagos State Taskforce has conducted a major raid on areas around the Fela Shrine and nearby black spots notorious for illegal drug peddling, hooliganism, and other criminal activities.
The raid led by Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Adetayo Akerele, the operation resulted in the arrest of 124 suspects. The raid targeted locations that had become hubs for hard drug markets, unlicensed restaurants, and liquor pubs, contributing to severe traffic congestion and environmental nuisance.
The crackdown occurred late at night during peak times when illegal activities were most prevalent. Akerele highlighted that the actions of these individuals violated environmental laws and posed significant risks to public health and safety.
The ongoing raids aim to address complaints from residents and curb the criminality linked to these areas, which have reportedly become havens for criminals.
Akerele emphasized the need for this intervention to maintain environmental order, enhance public safety, and uphold the status of Lagos as a Mega City.
The taskforce’s efforts are intended to eliminate drug trafficking and alleviate traffic issues, ensuring a safer and cleaner environment for residents.
He said, “The activities of these suspected criminals at Aminkanle Area of Agbado, Jobi Fele Road by African Shrine, and NerdC Street, especially at night is dangerous to humanity at all levels. The clean-up become necessary in the interest of environmental serenity, safety, sanity and maintenance of Lagos State’s Mega City status.
“They sell all manner of drugs indiscriminately there which is counter-productive to the society and they also contribute immensely to traffic build-up on adjoining roads at night when workers who have spent all day at work still shave to spend hours to get home. It is unfair to residents of this area and we will ensure that it is completely stamp out.”
