The Lagos State Government has apologised to its residents over its inability to kick off today the much publicized free HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) cervical cancer vaccine.
HPV is a sexually transmitted infection that causes cervical cancer and other HPV related diseases including vaginal and skin warts.
In a statement on behalf of the Health commissioner, Prof Akin Abayomi signed by the Deputy director Public Affairs, Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board, Olumide Filade the exercise got delayed due to logistic reasons from the Federal Ministry of Health, and it will tee off at a new date.
According to Prof Abayomi all Primary Healthcare Centre (PHCs), hospitals, worship/religious centres, outreach posts, gated estates, and posts in all communities in the state remained vaccination designated centres, and once the federal government fixes a new date, same will be announced to all residents.
He adds that aside the door-to-door HPV vaccination campaign, routine immunisation services will be ongoing at the PHCs in the over 20 local government areas (LGAs), and 37 local government development areas (LCDAs). And assures that the HPV vaccine is safe, free, and highly effective, and all and sundry to ensure eligible girls between ages 9 to 14 get the vaccine during the campaign.
The program is meant to prevent potential annual 71, 000 deaths, as the National Demographic Health Survey (NDHS) 2018 says 19% of women initiate sexual intercourse by age 15, hence increasing the risk of HPV infection.
