Lagos warns public about contaminated turkey on sale

The Lagos State Task Force has apprehended eight individuals accused of selling contaminated turkey that had been seized, and destroyed by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

According to spokesperson Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, a raid by NCS in Epe, revealed cartons of turkey, originally set ablaze at a dumpsite by customs officials, being illicitly sold to the public.

The NCS’s operation was prompted by tips from Lagos State House of Assembly member Rasheed Shabi and Oloja of Epe Oba Kamorudeen Animashaun. Task Force officials swiftly conducted raids near the dumpsite, arresting eight suspects in possession of the tainted turkeys and weapons.

Oba Kamorudeen commended the Task Force for its prompt action, highlighting the potential health risks posed by the contaminated meat amidst efforts to control a cholera outbreak in parts of Lagos. He emphasized the importance of preventing such incidents from escalating into public health crises.

Chairman CSP Adetayo Akerele, who oversaw the operation, stressed the dangers of reintroducing condemned goods into the market, noting they could pose severe health risks such as cancer and organ diseases. He assured the public that all confiscated items were secured at the agency’s headquarters, and the suspects would face legal charges.
