The military says it is set to collaborate with other security agencies and state governments to disrupt a new terrorist group, Lukarawa’s recruitment activities.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has disclosed that a new terrorist group, Lukarawa, has commenced recruitment efforts to strengthen its fighting capacity.
According to Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Media Operations, community members have been hesitant to report the group’s movements, contributing to its spread.
Earlier, Lukarawa attacked Mera town in Augie Local Government Area, Kebbi State, killing 15 people and seizing 100 cattle.
Buba added that Lukarawa is using social media and welfare incentives to attract young recruits. Despite these tactics, DHQ is closely monitoring the group’s activities and taking steps to halt its growth.
Last Thursday, DHQ confirmed the rise of this new terrorist faction, active in the northern regions of Sokoto and Kebbi states, with members reportedly entering from the Niger Republic and Mali, particularly following the recent coup in Niger.
A former Director of the Department of State Services, Mike Ejiofor, said while the group has been active since 2018, its numbers remain limited, posing no significant threat to national security at this time.
