Man gets 17-month jail term for N18.3m fraud after plea bargain

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Tuesday sentenced a man, Olufunsho Aladenola, to 17 months imprisonment for defrauding his business partnerof N18.3 million.

Justice Mojisola Dada sentenced Aladenola after he pleaded guilty to an amended three-count charge bordering on stealing and forgery.

Justice Dada ordered that the sentence should take effect from the day the convict was arraigned.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convict was first arraigned on April 26, 2023.

He pleaded not guilty to a 14-count charge bordering on fraud and forgery.

However, after trial commenced, Aladenola, in a plea bargain agreement, changed his plea of not guilty, to guilty.

The judge adopted the plea bargain agreement and sentenced the convict without an option of fine.

The court further ordered the convict to refund an outstanding balance of N6 million to the complainant, Mrs Olabisi Akinmola.

Earlier, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC’s) counsel, Mrs Tinuke Daramola, had said that the convict converted the sum of N18.3 million, property of the complainant, to his personal use.

She informed the court that the convict had refunded a total sum of N12 million to the complainant.
