A woman, Aramide Yekini Abeke, has allegedly committed mindboggling crime against her son Jamiu Barabas, for losing N3,000 while he was hawking coconut.
The incident happened in Badagry area of Lagos State.
According to human rights activist Olumide Omosebi who posted the incident on his Facebook page, on Sunday, August 18, 2024, Abeke’s son, Jamiu, managed to fall asleep after he had been “punished and beaten excessively overnight” for misplacing ₦3,000 while hawking coconuts for her the previous day.
“While he slept, his mother boiled a pot of water and then poured it on him while he slept, awakening him to a world of pain.
“He screamed and ran outside where he was rescued by neighbours, and the pain became unbearable, he was rushed to the hospital by neighbours and one of our GVN Volunteers, while we pushed for her arrest and escalated the matter to the DSVA and the FSU of the Badagry Police Station where she was detained and later charged to court,” Omosebi, a lawyer, stated.
The boy was admitted at the Badagry General Hospital where doctors tried to stabilise him.
However, the boy’s case was reportedly beyond what the doctors at as the Badagry General Hospital could tackle and he has now been referred to the Gbagada General Hospital where he has “continued to struggle for his life.”
A disturbing and unpublishable video of Jamiu’s condition was attached to the Facebook post, along with the suspect’s photograph.
Suffice to say that child abuse attracts stiff penalty upon conviction in Lagos State.
