The Nasarawa State House of Assembly Committee on Education has commended former governor Abdullahi Adamu for establishing Phoenix University, Agwada, in Kokona Local Government Area of the State.
This, the House said, would enhance the educational status of the state as no society grows beyond its educational standard.
Chairman of the committee and Deputy Majority Leader of the House, Abel Bala, made the commendation when he led his colleagues to the tertiary institution on Friday.
He said that the visit was at the instance of Mr Danladi Jatau, the Speaker of the house, following a request by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Abdullahi Bala, for a facility tour to assess its status.
Bala said, “We want to thank the Speaker of Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Mr. Danladi Jatau, who graciously permitted us to be here today.
”Last week, the Vice- Chancellor was in the house and requested the members to come and see the facilities in the university, hence the need for this visit.
”We have gone round and saw for ourselves the facilities on ground. The facilities are of international standard.
“We will ensure that as lawmakers we mobilise our constituents to patronise the university.”
He said that the house was happy that the former Governor of the State established the university considering the importance of education to societal development.
“Senator Abdullahi Adamu has done well for establishing the university,” Bala added.
He assured of the house’s collaboration for the growth and development of the university and the state at large.
“I want to assure you of our readiness to partner with you and to support the growth of this institution,” Bala added.
He also assured of the members’ readiness to encourage their constituents and others to patronise the university.
“I want to call on other stakeholders to patronise the university. I also want to call on all citizens to support Phoenix University to succeed,” Bala said.
The committee chairman commended Gov. Abdullahi Sule for approving the state government’s sponsorship of 92 students to study in the university.
”I want to commend Gov. Abdullahi Sule for his zeal and passion for education sector in the state.”
He urged the university to take the issue of security of staff and students seriously.
The committee assured of an enabling environment for teaching and learning through good laws and resolutions.
Earlier, the vice-chancellor of the university had appreciated the lawmakers for the visit.
“We are happy to have you as some stakeholders were able to come and see what we have in the university.”
Bala, who was the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna said that the university was licensed to operate on 9 June, 2023.
He said, “Currently, the university has been given approval for 24 programmes, with three Faculties and eight Departments,” he said.
The vice-chancellor disclosed that the university was working hard to commence academic activities. (NAN)
