National Model Creche & Nursery renamed after ex-First Lady Victoria Gowon

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has officially inaugurated the revamped National Model Creche and Nursery in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

She also announced its new name as “Dr Mrs Victoria Gowon National Creche and Nursery.”

The school, which had been operational since April 2001, fell into disuse following the tragic bomb explosion at the Police Headquarters in Abuja in 2011. The renaming ceremony thus marked its reopening after the refurbishment of the facility.

Wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima, representing the first lady, emphasized the importance of initiatives like the Workplace Nursery in laying the groundwork for progress and a promising future for Nigeria, stressing the need for improved bonding between mothers and their children.

The VC’s wife also said: “This facility will serve as a preparatory ground for early childhood care educational and recreational activities for the children, aligning with the policy thrust to improve the baby-friendly initiative of the current government under its “renewed hope” mantra.

As an advocate for a better life for families and a testament to the administration’s dedication, she adds: “The establishment of the Workplace Nursery stands as an affirmation to this administration’s dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for working and nursing mothers.”

Dr. Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, Minister of Women Affairs, highlights the positive impact of the facility and the nurturing environment it provides for children, noting that her ministry’s commitment to ensuring the women in both public and private sectors do not miss out on early motherhood due to their career pursuits.

The renamed “Dr Mrs Victoria Gowon National Creche and Nursery,” located in Aso-Koro, is said to be open to mothers from both public and private sectors, adding that its aims are to contribute to a more inclusive and equitable society, in alignment with a broader agenda for positive social change.
