NIPOST workers reject new CEO, shut down head office

Workers of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) on Monday protested against the appointment of Ms Tola Adeyemi as the new Chief Executive Officer and Postmaster-General.

They also locked the entrance gate of the agency’s headquarters in Abuja to express their grievances.

NIPOST had, on Saturday, announced the reinstatement of Adeyemi Adepoju as the postmaster-general of the agency.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday relieved Adepoju of his role and appointed Tola Odeyemi as the new CEO of NIPOST as part of the leadership shuffle implemented for agencies and parastatals under the ministry of communications, innovations and digital economy.

However, a statement on NIPOST’s official X account on Saturday states that the president had reinstated Adepoju.

According to the statement, Adepoju was reinstated due to his “exceptional leadership and performance.”

The statement reads “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) has reinstated Rt. Honorable Adeyemi Sunday Adepoju as the Postmaster General of the Federation and CEO of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) due to his exceptional leadership and performance.”

Following the statement, a video of Adepoju in a jubilatory mood over the purported reinstatement surfaced on social media. Meanwhile, the presidency has not released an official statement confirming his reinstatement as the postmaster general of NIPOST.

The protesting workers denied entry to the newly appointed NIPOST CEO, Odeyemi, saying, her appointment was against their wish and that, they preferred Adepoju.

While they wielded placards with different inscriptions, they chanted solidarity songs.

Ms Tola Odeyemi is a tech expert and the Chief Executive Officer of Alpha-Geek Technologies.

She has an extensive 15-year career, reflecting expertise in Technology Policy, Financial Technology Regulation, Environmental Regulation, Investment and Trade Promotion, Infrastructure Finance, and Public Sector Policy Reform.

A tech expert, Mr. Oluwaseun Dania, has commended Odeyemi’s appointment, saying, the discerning decision by President Tinubu’s administration is indicative of a future-forward governance approach as well as heralds a new dawn for NIPOST
