Oshoala shines as lone African contender in 2023 Women’s Ballon d’Or shortlist

Super Falcons’ striker, Asisat Oshoala, 28, has secured her second consecutive nomination for the prestigious 2023 Women’s Ballon d’Or, solidifying her status as the only African female player to earn a spot on this year’s shortlist.

Oshoala made history last year as the inaugural African female footballer to achieve this distinction.

During the 2021-22 season, she distinguished herself as the top scorer, netting an impressive 20 goals and providing four assists in 19 appearances in the Spanish Liga F.

In the subsequent 2022-23 season, Oshoala continued to showcase her exceptional form, amassing 21 goals and three assists in 28 domestic league matches, and adding five more goals across all nine Women’s Champions League fixtures.

Her prowess led her to jointly claim the title of top scorer in Spain’s domestic league.

Following this feat, Oshoala also showcased her skills in the round of 16 matches with the Super Falcons at the recently concluded Women’s World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand.
Now, Oshoala sets her sights on the 2023 Women’s Ballon d’Or, where she will contend with fellow football luminaries who have excelled in their respective leagues and nations.
