Oyo Govt arrests organiser of Islamic carnival where 30 kids died

The organizers of a funfair where not less than 30 Children died during a stampede has been arrested by the Oyo State Government.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has confirmed in a statement he personally signed and issued in reaction to the sad event.

While commiserating with affected families, Makinde assured that the government will investigate the accident and hold everyone involved to account.

The stampede occurred on Wednesday during a children carnival at Basorun Islamic High School in Ibadan, with about 30 children dead and several others sustaining various degrees of injuries.

The governor stated, “We have taken steps to ensure no further deaths are recorded at this venue by deploying security agents to restore order at the venue. We also deployed medical personnel and ambulances to the venue. The event has been stopped, and attendees have been escorted out of the venue. We are taking all realistic measures to ensure that the venue is secured.

“While investigations are ongoing, the primary organisers of the event that led to this stampede have been taken into custody.”

Governor Makinde added that “…anyone directly or remotely involved in this disaster will be held accountable. Please remain calm as the security agencies investigate this unfortunate incident.”

Earlier, the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade announced that victims had been swiftly transported to various hospitals within the Ibadan metropolis for medical attention.

“Parents who are concerned about the whereabouts of their children are urged to check the following medical facilities in Ibadan, where affected children have been taken for proper medical care, with valid means of identification: Patnas Hospital, Basorun; Western Hospital, Basorun; Ringroad State Hospital; Molly Specialist Hospital; and the University College Hospital, Ibadan.” the Commissioner declared.
