Malawi’s Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima, his wife Mary, and eight other people had been headed to attend the funeral of the country’s former Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Ralph Kasambara, when their plane dropped off the radar on Monday.
The VP, aged 51, his wife and eight others were confirmed dead on Tuesday after a day-long search.
According to the Malawi Government which mounted an obituary for the late attorney-general, Kasambara succumbed to heart failure and was buried on Monday with military honours at his home Village, Chijere in the area of Senior Chief Timbiri in Nkhata Bay district.
Vice-President Chilima was to attend the event, but his plane crashed before the end of the less-than-an-hour flight.
Kasambara had served under the administration of former President Dr. Joyce Banda, and was found dead at a lodge in Area 47, Lilongwe, on Friday.
Speaking at the funeral ceremony, Minister of Defence, Harry Mkandawire, who represented President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, said the president was deeply saddened by the death of Kasambara, as his work in the country cannot go unnoticed.
The president gave 5 million Kwacha [$2,895.22] as a condolence gift to the family. Born on 26 September 1968, the late Kasambara is survived by a wife and three sons.
