Yet-to-be-identified gunmen have attacked the Nkwo Ibagwa market in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The criminals, during the attack on Wednesday, razed two vehicles and two tricycles and destroyed goods worth millions of naira.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen were pro-Biafra agitators who were allegedly enforcing a sit-at-home order in commemoration of Biafra Heroes Day slated for today, May 30.
Charred remains of vehicles and tricycles loaded with goods were seen in different parts of the market.
The development has put fear in the residents and traders who continue to count their loses following the incident.
Meanwhile, the attack has raised tensions in Enugu State, as residents expressed reservations about disobeying the sit-at-home declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra in honour of those killed during the Nigerian civil war.
In an apparent move to counter the sit-at-home order, heavy security equipment have been deployed to various strategic locations in Enugu State capital to reassure residents to go about their normal businesses, as there would be adequate security for them.
However, our correspondent reports that many roads in Enugu State are empty, as only security vehicles were seen patrolling major roads early Thursday morning.
Efforts to get the reaction of the state police command on the attack in Igbo-Eze South proved abortive, as the spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, did not take his calls at the time of filing this report.
