The Nigeria Police Force has returned the ₦3 million extorted from Kelechi Isaac, a Ghana-based Nigerian, by its personnel attached to Zone 16 Command in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
Some policemen made Isaac to part with the money while attending a friend’s traditional wedding ceremony in the state.
Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrest of the policemen involved, saying:
“The policemen involved in this case of extortion of 3m have been arrested. The men are attached to zone 16 command in Yenagoa. The command has been asked to produce the men at the FHQ.”
Adejobi emphasized the Force’s commitment to sanitizing the system and ensuring justice, stating:
“The FHQ will continue to sanitize the system and ensure justice is done in all cases brought to its notice.”
He also quoted the Inspector-General of Police as condemning such unprofessional conduct and reiterating his stance against corruption and illegal acts.
On Friday, Isaac confirmed receiving the returned funds, saying:
“They have given me the money today. (I am) just coming in from Bayelsa now. They did (the handover in cash), but after the handover I refused to touch the cash, insisting they get a PoS agent to take the cash and transfer it to me, which they did.”
