The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has appointed Pastor Olukayode Pitan to take over from Pastor Idowu Iluyomade at the City of David Parish in Lagos.
The church governing council made this decision during the just concluded RCCG’s 72nd annual convention, marking the end of Iluyomade’s leadership at the parish.
The change in leadership followed public criticisms over the lavish 60th birthday celebration for Pastor Iluyomade’s wife, Siju. The celebration took place shortly after the death of Herbert Wigwe, the former CEO of Access Bank and a significant member of the church.
A video of the event showed Nigerian high-life artist Flavour N’abania performing songs like Ada Ada, Berna, and Adamma, which sparked controversy about the event’s timing and the presence of a secular musician at a pastor’s event.
In response to the backlash, the RCCG Governing Council suspended Iluyomade for three months in June, appointing Pastor Charles Kpandei from RCCG Resurrection Parish as the interim pastor.
Pastor Pitan is set to take over from Kpandei, who has led the parish temporarily since Iluyomade’s suspension.
Before his appointment to City of David Parish, Pastor Pitan served as the Pastor in Charge of the Tabernacle of David in Region 51 and held the position of Regional Pastor.
